Unit
4:
The Earth's Crust
The Earth's Crust unit covers concepts
related to three topics:
Minerals and Mining
Students learn that there are approximately 3000 minerals found
within the Earth, mostly as ore that are extracted by various
means depending on the size, location, and value of the ore body.
They learn how ore is processed, first by crushing and grinding
and then by chemical separation or smelting. They understand that
the mineral is refined and shaped before it is sent to market
and formed into products.
Weathering and Erosion
Students examine how wind, rain, and ice cause changes in the
Earth's surface over time, affecting rocks and soil. They learn
how rocks break down into smaller rocks, combine with decaying
living organisms, and form soils. They understand why farmers
must monitor the quantity and quality of soil to support deep
root systems that can withstand the forces of moving water and
strong winds.
The Dynamic Earth
Students learn that the Earth's crust is made up of seven large
and about a dozen smaller plates called lithospheric plates. These
plates float over the partly melted inner crust. The manner in
which plates rub, bump, or push against each other determines
the occurrence of earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountains.
